My Thoughts on Dudley Stephens Fleece
As you’ve probably noticed on my Instagram on a near daily basis, I love fleece. If I’m not in pajamas, 9/10 I’m in some type of fleece (it is February in NYC, can you blame me?!). I gravitate towards all things snuggly, warm, and cozy so it’s no surprise that fleece has become a beloved wardrobe fabric staple of mine (so much so that it was featured as one of my top products of 2020).
Conveniently enough, my fleece addiction has been fueled by a total brand crush that I have on the queens of fleece themselves, Dudley Stephens. I’ve been wearing Dudley Stephens styles for the past few years now, and have accumulated quite the collection of turtlenecks, tops, dresses, etc. (many of which you’ll see below). Not sure if I should be embarrassed or proud of all of the fleece I’ve been collecting (definitely leaning towards proud 😉), but I’m absolutely positive that I have Dudley Stephens to blame!
I also bought the Mens Duffield Pullover for my dad and Johnny for Christmas this year and they both wear theirs all the time and think it’s the coziest pullover they own. Anyway, I always have a bunch of DMs on Instagram about their items, so I figured it would be helpful to compile all of my thoughts and answers for you here! Of course if I don’t cover something that you’ve been wondering about, feel free to reach out and ask!
Commonly Asked Questions
What is Dudley Stephens?
Let’s start here! Dudley Stephens is a fashion company founded by two sisters based in Greenwich, CT. They make their styles out of recycled materials (like water bottles), and manufacture them in the US. In the past few years they’ve taken off as a classic and chic brand that allows everyone to put their own personal twist on staying comfortable and cozy in fleece (ok, I just wrote that synopsis from straight memory… can you tell I’m a fan?!).
What’s the difference between the Park Slope vs the Greenpoint vs the Cobble Hill Turlenecks?
The length and whether or not they have pockets! They all have the same collar and sleeves, but the Park Slope has the shortest length (it hits right at the hip, except if you’re shorter like me it will come down a little further), the Greenpoint has the medium length (it hits right below where your jean buttons would be), and the Cobble Hill is the longest (it covers your booty so it can be worn with leggings and it has pockets!!). The Cobble Hill is their OG style as well, so it’s the first one I bought. They also have a really great graphic that directly compares the lengths of each on their turtleneck landing page.
What’s the difference between the Vello vs Terry Fleece?
The vello fleece is what you would usually expect when you think of fleece fabric, except somehow it’s even softer. It’s their traditional fleece and is very warm and cozy. The terry fleece is a bit more like sweatshirt fabric and a tad lighter. You can wear the terry fabric all year round but I tend to reach for it more in the warmer months and the vello fabric in the colder months! Take a peek at the Dudley Stephens fabric guide for a more in-depth look at the fabric comparisons of all of their fabrics.
Do they run true to size?
For me, yes! I am 5’1″ and wear an XS or 00 and so far all of the Dudley Stephens styles have fit me well in an XS. The sleeves are snug but I prefer them that way so the style doesn’t feel too baggy. Of course, I can only speak for my size so I’d recommend looking through the Dudley Stephens fit guide to see how it fits for every size!
How do you wash them?
I put my fleece inside out and wash it with with items that are similar in color to it. Then I let it air dry! However, I have dried them in the dryer before by accident and they didn’t shrink or anything. Here’s their recommended instructions for caring for your Dudley if you’re looking for more information.
Do they ever go on sale?
Which is your favorite style?
Have you tried their pants?
Actually, yes! I have the Jay Joggers in off-white and really like their fit, stretch, pockets, and of course the signature Dudley Stephens embroidery pineapple detail. I promise that once you start with your first Dudley purchase, you’ll soon want to wear the fleece all over your body so their pants won’t be far off down on your wish list! 😂
If this is my first time purchasing a Dudley Stephens, which one should I get?
I would go with one of their iconic turtlenecks! They launched the brand with this signature style and they’ve become an absolute wardrobe staple of mine. Something about the structured neck and slim silhouette elevates them and sets them above any other fleece pullover. Throw your hair in a bun, add some statement earrings and sneakers or boots, and you’re good to GO. Beyond easy, chic, and comfortable.
Which style will you be purchasing next?
Oh this is a hard one… every Tuesday morning at 10 am est they drop new styles, so I would have to say that my answer varies from week to week. But I am currently eyeing the Brighton Boatneck top in either of the stripe fleece color combos. I’m also so looking forward to trying out their new Jersey fabrication that just launched as well!
